Much of the river is within the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and the Upper Sacramento River can reasonably be called one of the best ‘roadside’ fisheries in the West. Despite having nearly 40 miles of easily accessible water (there are over 15 freeway exits and railroad tracks that parallel the length of the river) the Upper Sacramento River remains surprisingly lightly fished. In fact, anglers willing to hike even a mere 10 minutes along the railroad tracks from almost any access spot will find themselves fishing water that remains relatively untouched for most of the year.

BUG HATCHES ON THE UPPER SACRAMENTO RIVER
  • Blue Winged Olive- Spring-Fall
  • Midge- Year round
  • Golden Stones- May- June
  • Salmonfly- May and June
  • PMD- May- June & September-November
  • Little Yellow Stone- June and July
  • Caddis- Spring-Fall
  • October Caddis- Sept- November
Fishing Pro tips:
  • Fish along the edges of the river when the water is high and during spring runoff.
  • Fishing is most successful in the mornings and evenings of July and August. Use a large stonefly or hopper-like insects when it’s hot outside.
  • When using nymphs, if your line isn’t catching on the riverbed, your leader might be too short or you might need more weight.
  • Use smaller flies and thin line to catch more fish.
  • For pocket water, make short casts and keep your rod high without using an indicator.  This is called a high stick short line method.
  • During summer evenings during the last hour fishing can be very productive.
