Trinity River Fishing
The Trinity River is a rewarding yet challenging destination for steelhead fishing. As the largest tributary of the Klamath River, it holds some impressive steelhead and offers over 100 miles of fishable water. Its proximity to Redding, CA, makes it popular, but solitude can still be found along its many stretches.
Set against stunning natural scenery, the river attracts anglers not just for its beauty but for the skill it demands. Fast currents and complex structure require strong casting ability. Because of its mountain location, fishing conditions are heavily influenced by weather and river flow. With patience and experience, a day on the Trinity can be truly unforgettable.
Target Species
Steelhead season on the Trinity River runs from October through March, with the peak occurring between December and February.
The most effective technique is nymphing under indicators, though swinging flies can work well—especially early in the season when warmer water temperatures make the fish more aggressive. We offer instruction in both single-hand casting and two-handed (Spey) swing techniques for anyone interested in learning.
Where We Fish
The Trinity River flows 165 miles through the rugged Klamath Mountains and is designated a National Wild and Scenic River. For much of its course, it winds through narrow canyons and mountain meadows, with fast-moving water and striking scenery. Due to the mountainous terrain, conditions can be cold—so dressing in layers is recommended. Waders and a rain jacket are essential.
A typical float covers 6–7 miles of river. With over eight launch points available, our choice of section depends on current river conditions and your goals for the trip.
